Post #5 - What Have I learned?

     This class has been a great experience that has allowed me to grow as a professional. Our unit on listening I found to be particularly useful as I have never considered myself to be the greatest listener. I am currently working on becoming a more active listener so that I am able to retain more information from presentations/conversations with those around me and in the workplace.

    In addition, I am also pleased to say that I feel my overall confidence in public speaking has improved. Although I had taken public speaking classes in the past and had never really too many issues when it came to speaking, I found this class provided a great learning environment and where everyone was supportive of one another.

     Steve Jobs' 2005 address to the graduating class at Stanford University is an excellent example of great public speaking and speech writing. Jobs has a natural ability to captivate his audience and was able to grip ahold of everyone right from the beginning by diving straight into telling stories. His moral filled stories combined with his subtle joke-telling intertwined with his fluidity of speech made his address powerful and intriguing to the audience and kept them hanging on to hear what he had to say.      Jobs used pauses effectively in his address, especially while discussing his cancer diagnosis. This gave a bit of drama to his speech and made it all the more interesting.      Steve’s address remains one of the most inspirational I have heard.
